Wash a scrape or small cut with either soap and water or an antiseptic wash. Use cold water, as warm water encourages blood flow.
Place an absorbent gauze pad over the scrape or cut and apply firm pressure until the bleeding stops -- generally within a minute or two for minor wounds. Watch for wounds that do not stop bleeding, in which case more advanced measures should be undertaken until you can consult a doctor.
Pat the wound with another gauze pad to dry it. Lift the pad and spread a thin layer of first aid cream such as a triple antibiotic. You want the medicine to be thick enough to cover well and not absorb into the bandage readily, but thin enough that it doesn't squeeze out after the bandage is applied.
Place an absorbent gauze pad on top of the treated wound. Use tape or rolled gauze to secure in place.
Change the wound covering, reapplying the ointment, daily or every time it gets wet, if more often. Stop bandaging the wound when it is healed.
