Cover severe cuts, gashes and wounds with a thick layer of absorbent gauze. Hold the gauze in place as you lift the wound above your head, if possible. While pressure helps stop the bleeding, lifting any cut over your heart level slows the bleeding as well.
Add more layers of gauze, as needed, if the bleeding continues through the initial layers of gauze. Avoid removing the initial gauze because it will have the blood's clotting agents.
Wash the injury off with an antiseptic wash, forceful stream of water, and soap if possible. Pat dry. If the wound is still bleeding, washing and drying may not be an option.
Cover the injury with antibiotic ointment and a thick layer of absorbent gauze. Use rolled gauze and tape to secure in place; you may need to keep pressure on it if it is still bleeding. Seek immediate medical attention for wound assessment.
